Dear Friends & Colleagues,

In collaboration with the International Academy for Clinical Hematology (IACH), we are pleased to announce the 2024 Middle East Master Class in Hematology (MEMAC) which will be held on January 5^th– 6^th, 2024 in Raffles Hotel, Dubai – UAE.

The field of hematology is the most dynamic field concerning new pathophysiology findings and their implementation in new therapies. The development of new drugs (targeted medicines, immunotherapy, etc.) is accompanied by a growing demand for sharing experiences to improve the quality of patient treatment and care through professional competencies and excellence.

With this background, the main objective of the Middle East Master Class (MEMAC) course series is to provide local and regional hematologists with up-to-date insights on the latest developments in the management of hematological malignancies.

The program will cover the most effective initiatives in acute and chronic leukemia, lymphomas, and multiple myeloma.

Ali Bazarbachi, MD

Professor of Medicine (Hematology and Oncology), Professor of Anatomy, Cell Biology, and Physiological Sciences, and Director of the bone marrow transplantation program at the American University of Beirut-Medical Center. He received his MD and PhD degrees, residency, and fellowship training at the University of Paris VII in France. Dr. Ali Bazarbachi's basic and translational research focuses on targeted therapies for hematological malignancies as well as post-transplant pharmacological interventions. He has co-authored more than 350 articles in leading scientific journals including The New England Journal of Medicine, Science, Journal of Experimental Medicine, The Lancet Oncology, Journal of Clinical Oncology, Blood, Nature Communication, and Cancer Research. He is the Chairman of the EMBMT Leukemia Working Party, Chairman of the NCCN Lymphoma Group for the Middle East and North Africa, past President of the Lebanese Society of Hematology, past President of the International Association for Comparative Research on Leukemia and Related Disorders, and Associate Editor of Bone Marrow Transplantation. He garnered multiple prestigious national and international awards including the 2008 award of the French National Academy of Medicine.

Amer Zeidan, MBBS, MHS is an Associate Professor of Medicine (Hematology) at Yale University. He is also the medical director of Hematology Early Therapeutics Research, the leader of the Myeloid Malignancies DART (Disease Aligned Research Team), and the director of CME at Hematology division at Yale Cancer Center. Dr. Zeidan has completed a hematology/oncology fellowship and a clinical research fellowship in myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) at Johns Hopkins University where he also earned a Master of Health Science (MHS) degree in Clinical Investigation. Dr. Zeidan specializes in the management of myeloid malignancies especially MDS and acute myeloid leukemia (AML). The focus of Dr. Zeidan’s clinical/translational research is the development of novel therapies for myeloid malignancies, with a special focus on targeted therapies and immunotherapy-based approaches. Dr. Zeidan is also active in health outcomes and comparative effectiveness research for blood cancer diseases and their therapies.

Graduating from the Basc Country University, Spain, he trained in Hematology in the Postgraduate School of Hematology of Hospital Clinic of Barcelona (Prof Rozman). During 14 years was the head of the “Research Unit of Cell Therapy and Stem Cell Transplantation”. This unit is one of the pioneers of BMT in Europe. He has been the General Secretary of the European Bone Marrow Transplant Group (EBMT) and the President of the JACIE. He is the Director of the Department of Hematology and Oncology at Hospital Clinic of Barcelona, and Director of the Department of Medicine at the School of Medicine of the University of Barcelona.

Anna Sureda, (MD, PhD) is nowadays the Head of the Clinical Hematology Department of Institut Català d’Oncologia – Hospitalet, Barcelona. She had previously been a Senior Consultant in Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau, Barcelona, and a Senior Consultant focused on lymphomas and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) at Addenbrookes–Cambridge University Hospital, UK. Dr. Anna Sureda has focused her career on clinical investigations into the treatment of Hodgkin’s lymphoma, non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, and multiple myeloma patients evaluating novel therapies such as immunotherapy combined with stem-cell transplantation. She was appointed Chairperson of the Lymphoma Working Party (LWP) of the European Group for Blood and Marrow Transplantation (EBMT) from 2004 to 2010 and Secretary of the same organization from 2010 to 2016. She was elected co-chair of the Lymphoma Committee of the Center for International Blood and Marrow Transplant Research (CIBMTR) and has served the organization in this position from 2015 to 2019. She was subsequently appointed as a member of a large non-US Transplant Center in the Advisory Committee of the CIBMTR (from February 2019). Anna Sureda is President of the Spanish Society of Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation and Cellular Therapy (GETH-TC) and, from March 2022, President of the EBMT. Anna Sureda is a regular reviewer of several peer-reviewed journals and has co-authored more than 400 manuscripts.
